Biography of Amb. Monawar
Ambassador Wali J. Monawar currently serves as Afghanistan’s Envoy to the Kingdom of Belgium, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the EU and NATO in Brussels, Belgium.
He served in previous ambassadorial positions of Afghanistan to the State of Qatar and the Kingdom of Bahrain. Prior to the current function in Brussels, Ambassador Monawar was the Chief of the State Protocol of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan under President Ashraf Ghani. He held a related function as Presidential Chief of Protocol years before that also under the former administration led by ex-President Hamid Karzai from 2004-2006. Other political positions he held include Economic Adviser to the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2002-2004 and Political Secretary of Afghanistan to the United Nations in New York from 2003-2004.
But Ambassador Monawar committed his time not only to the world of foreign policy: as Director General of the Social and Educational Foundation of Afghanistan he has been responsible for the realization of effective help to numerous Afghan children in achieving their dreams to get an education and ultimately a better life.
Prior to returning to Afghanistan just after the events of September 11th, Ambassador Monawar worked in various, major corporations in the United States such as Vice President at Omnicon Groups Zimmerman & Partners in Florida, or as Director of Finance and Marketing at Stadium Financial Group in New Jersey.
Ambassador Monawar holds a M.A. (hon) in Public Policy from New England College, New Hampshire, and a B.A. in Political Science from Florida Atlantic University.
He is fluent in English, Dari, Pashto, and Urdu, has an advanced level in German, and an intermediate level in French and Spanish.
He is married and has three children.
